The city of Nice has intensified its fight against speeding and refusal to comply by equipping the municipal police with “Stopsticks.” This device, presented by Mayor Christian Estrosi, aims to enhance road safety. Additionally, it is intended to protect both police officers and citizens.
In response to a worrying increase in fatal accidents linked to refusal to comply, the city of Nice is deploying a new weapon: Stopsticks. This device will allow for controlled tire puncturing of fleeing vehicles, thus ensuring a secure interception.
Road violence has tragically marked Nice and the Maralpine region this summer. Lives have been lost, including those of a firefighter, a gendarme, and a 7-year-old girl. These incidents, often caused by drivers refusing to comply, driving without a license or under the influence of substances, have prompted a strong response from local authorities.
An Innovative Device for Secured Interventions
Stopsticks are designed to stop a vehicle without causing loss of control. Equipped with hollow spikes, they allow for progressive tire deflation, ensuring a safe intervention for both the driver and the police. Two officers are required for each operation: one to deploy the device and another to secure the environment.
Mayor Christian Estrosi also noted that the Stopstick will not be used against two-wheelers for obvious safety reasons.
Enhancing Security on the Promenade des Anglais
The Promenade des Anglais, an emblematic artery of Nice, is particularly affected by speeding, especially at night. To better control these behaviors, in addition to the Stopsticks, the city plans to install four new speed cameras. These devices will complement the existing cameras to cover the entire Promenade.
Christian Estrosi reminded that Nice is at the forefront in terms of security technologies. In addition to the Stopsticks, the city has equipped itself with drones to strengthen surveillance and the effectiveness of police interventions. The mayor wants zero tolerance for speeding and dangerous behaviors, not only on the Promenade des Anglais but throughout the city.
Necessary Coordination with the State
However, the installation of new cameras requires state approval, especially to link them to national control systems. Despite administrative delays, Christian Estrosi is determined to move this project forward. He hopes that the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes will quickly take the necessary steps to finalize the project.
With these initiatives, the municipality intends to protect citizens and prevent further tragedies linked to road violence. Thanks to the Stopsticks, the municipal police will be better equipped to effectively intervene during refusal to comply, thereby reducing risks for everyone.
