Christian Estrosi announced it during the traditional New Year ceremony for residents of the western neighborhoods of the city: the planning for the Victorine tunnel to alleviate nuisances for residents and smooth traffic during peak hours to avoid congestion has come to an end.
Decision time: The proposed solution is a one-way tunnel under the Victorine hill, starting from the Mathis road.
All in agreement? Yes and no, because according to Paul Cuturello, municipal and metropolitan councilor of the PS but also (and perhaps predominantly?) the former general councilor of the district defeated in the last election by Dominique Estrosi-Sassone, the commitment of the Mayor of Nice raises some doubts:
“Regarding the exit tunnel of the Voie Rapide, Christian Estrosi once again demonstrates that for him, promises only bind those who listen to them.
On May 21, 2008, over four and a half years ago, he promised in the press to initiate discussions “starting in September 2008” and that “the new exit could be operational in 2012.”!
After promising last July the tunnel’s commissioning in 2016, he declared this Saturday, January 19, and confirmed on Tuesday, January 22, “that it will be completed between 2016 and 2020.”
This new schedule is an admission: For Christian Estrosi, the exit tunnel of the Voie Rapide is not a priority.
Yet, with 35,000 vehicles per day, since May 2008, residents have endured the passage of more than 55 million vehicles, and as many motorists have been stuck in traffic jams during peak hours.
Meanwhile, the new stadium will be delivered in September 2013. Once again, Christian Estrosi shows that he prioritizes the superfluous over the necessary.”
