Between Commemoration and Forgetting: An Exhibition That Questions and Challenges Memories
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Nice, the city of Nice organized a unique photographic exhibition titled “Nice in Turmoil.” This exhibition, held outdoors on Place Garibaldi, chronicles through 76 photographs the poignant history of the city during the Nazi occupation.
Inaugurated by Jean-Marc Giaume and Marie-Christine Fix, in the presence of mayor Christian Estrosi, this exhibition serves as a vibrant tribute to the memory of the resistance fighters and the uprising that led to the liberation of Nice on August 28, 1944.
The Landing in Nice and its 80th Anniversary
On August 28, 1944, the city of Nice was freed from Nazi control after hard-fought battles involving many resistance fighters. This event, crucial in the history of World War II in France, is celebrated today with a mix of pride and solemnity. The 80th anniversary of this event marks an opportunity to reflect on these dark days, honor the heroes, and keep the collective memory alive.
The exhibition “Nice in Turmoil” is part of this approach. It unfolds across five major themes: the occupied and fortified city, the wounded city, the uprising of August 28, Nice liberated, and the memory of Liberation.
An Understated Opening
On-site, the opening began in a rather subdued, almost solemn atmosphere, reflective of the photographs on display. The rare exchanges between visitors seemed marked by a certain introspection, with each taking time to delve into the images. However, the arrival of mayor Christian Estrosi, surrounded by his officials, briefly disturbed this calm.
Although courteous, the mayor moved quickly through the exhibition, not taking the time to examine all the photographs. His hasty departure left the public somewhat bewildered. Additionally, there was no speech or official interaction to contextualize or deepen the meaning of this commemoration. (Editor’s note: The mayor was expected at the Monument to the Dead at the same time) Perhaps a missed opportunity to strengthen the link between historical memory and current generations.
A Tribute Open to Interpretation
Despite the lack of formal exchanges, the exhibition “Nice in Turmoil” remains a poignant and accessible tribute to all. The decision by the city to install it outdoors, on a public square, allows every passerby to stop and reflect on this pivotal period in the city’s history. Some may have felt lost in the absence of a more detailed explanation, but this freedom given to visitors to interpret the photographs in their own way can also be seen as a deliberate choice, encouraging everyone to make their own journey through history.
