The Nice municipality provides doctors with a driver to facilitate home visits for isolated elderly people.
In Nice, the municipality has strengthened a system aimed at elderly people without a general practitioner. The initiative relies on logistical support: a driver accompanies volunteer doctors on their trips. The objective is to allow practitioners to visit isolated patients who can no longer access care.
“In Nice, we refuse to let age, isolation, or the absence of a general practitioner deprive our seniors of care. Access to health is a fundamental right, at any age of life,” explains Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, the president of the Metropolis, and the deputy president of the Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d’Azur Region. He adds that thanks to this helping hand, we uphold a simple principle: no one should be left out of the healthcare system, as receiving medical care is not a privilege, it is a right.”
A system coordinated with field actors
Implemented since the beginning of the year, the system is based on a partnership between the city, the Territorial Professional Health Community (CPTS) of Nice Centre and Nice East, and the association Les Petits Frรจres des Pauvres. These structures identify the concerned patients: people over 75 years old, often affected by long-term conditions and without a general practitioner.
Once identified, these patients benefit from the visit of a volunteer doctor. The city of Nice provides a driver to facilitate the practitioner’s commute to the home. The initiative particularly targets the central and eastern sectors of the city, where many elderly people live alone and encounter difficulties accessing care.
The consultations are not limited to a one-time medical examination. Each visit becomes a gateway to wider support. Independent nurses, partner pharmacists, home help, and social services from the CCAS can be mobilized to extend care. This coordinated follow-up aims to strengthen support at home and offer comprehensive assistance.
Since its implementation, 36 isolated patients have been able to receive an in-home consultation. All have reconnected with medical follow-up, whereas they were previously lacking care.
