For a few months now, it was known that Nice wanted to apply for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2028, and it is now official: it is a candidate.
Since 1985, the European Commission has designated a city as “European Capital of Culture” for a duration of one year. For the 2028 title, Nice is a candidate and will be competing, for now, against the cities of Saint Denis, Roubaix, Rouen, and Clermont-Ferrand. It will be elected alongside a Czech city.
Thus, like Paris in 1989, Avignon in 2000, Lille in 2004 or Marseille in 2013, Nice hopes to obtain this title which, besides being prestigious, significantly boosts the cultural development of the city.
For now, the City of Nice has announced that it will deploy a number of resources so that Nice can achieve this title and is planning an investment plan of over 100 million euros.
After the renovation of the Matisse, Chéret museums and the Mamac, it will be the turn of the Victorine Studios and the opera to undergo renovations. Christian Estrosi also stated that the 109 will be developed.
Finally, the demolition and replacement of the TNN, overseen by former Minister of Culture Jean-Jacques Aillagon, will also be part of the project to become the European Capital of Culture in 2028.
The Mayor of Nice also announced that by 2025, all kindergartens and primary schools in the city will have to offer children an introduction to two artistic practices.
