On the occasion of World Multiple Sclerosis Day, which takes place on May 30th, the City of Nice, the National Ethical Reflection Space on Neurodegenerative Diseases, and the Nice University Hospital are joining forces to organize a citizen forum. This event aims to allow people with multiple sclerosis and their caregivers to express their expectations and difficulties facing this disease.

Nice, a welcoming city for people living with a neurodegenerative disease

The main objective of this forum is to mobilize as many people as possible to make Nice the first city to be aware and welcoming to all people living with a progressive neurological disease. Whether you are directly affected by a neurodegenerative disease such as multiple sclerosis or you are a close caregiver, your participation is essential.

The citizen forum will be held this Tuesday, May 30th, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Pasteur 2 (Zone C, 6th floor/ 30 voie romaine, Nice) and will offer an open and supportive dialogue space. Participants will have the opportunity to respond to various questions aimed at guiding their reflection on key topics related to the daily life of people with neurodegenerative diseases and their caregivers.

Participants will be invited to share their experiences and suggestions regarding the following areas:

  1. Businesses – Are you comfortable when you need to go shopping, in a local store, a supermarket, or a hypermarket? Would you like shopkeepers and supermarket cashiers to be more aware of your situation? Could a specific welcome be useful to you?
  2. Culture & leisure – Can you easily access cultural and leisure venues? What adaptations do you think should be imagined to make these places more accessible and welcoming to people with neurodegenerative diseases or their close caregivers?
  3. Mobility – Do you encounter particular difficulties when you need to move around (on foot, by bus, tram, or train)? What arrangements would facilitate your travels?
  4. Health – Do you encounter particular difficulties during your medical appointments or when receiving home visits from professionals? In the hospital, do you think the welcome is adapted to your situation?

All contributions and exchanges during the citizen forum will be confidential and exclusively part of this project. However, people who cannot be present will also have the opportunity to send their suggestions by email to the following address: ethiquemne@gmail.com.

Additionally, to mark this World Day, several iconic buildings and sites in the city of Nice will be lit up in blue once night falls. Among them are the City Hall, Bellanda Tower, and the greenhouse in Phoenix Park. This initiative aims to raise further awareness of multiple sclerosis and demonstrate the City of Nice’s support for the cause.

By encouraging the participation of all citizens, Nice aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment for people with neurodegenerative diseases. The citizen forum is an important step in raising awareness and implementing tangible changes to improve the daily lives of those affected by these diseases.
