In the presence of Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis, and Deputy President of the Provence Alpes-Cรดte d’Azur region. The ceremony took place in a calm morning for a time of prayer.

Every year this event is celebrated in Israel to pay tribute to the 6 million Jews who died during the Second World War. This year, the commemoration holds particular significance following the pogrom of October 7, 2023, in Israel. “We will gather all those who died in the Holocaust and those who are currently fighting for their lives,” affirms Michรจle Merowka, representing Daniel Wancier, President of the Yad Vashem Committee Nice Cรดte d’Azur.

At the beginning of the ceremony, a siren sounded through the loudspeakers installed at the entrance of the Chateau Israeli cemetery. It echoes those heard in Israel. This alarm marks the start of the Shoah commemorations. To honor their memories, city and departmental officials, along with middle school students, read aloud the names of the deceased. At the entrance of the Israeli cemetery, one can find a war memorial inscribed with the names of the 3,602 deportees from Nice.
