World Press Freedom Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1993 following the Seminar on the Development of an Independent and Pluralistic African Press. Since then, on May 3rd, this day pays tribute to the thousands of journalists who fight every day for press freedom.

Nice Premium feels more concerned with this day than any other media, because this freedom, indeed, comes at a price. The fight is a daily one to deliver information and avoid traps. Our platform, always online and of a personal scale, has allowed us to be irreverent, fast, and free in our actions. Over the years, the players in your life (political, cultural, sports…) have started to recognize our means of expression in your region. Now, Nice Premium provides them an additional voice — and path — in sharing their work and/or passions with the Côte d’Azur public.
This audience can also count on Nice Premium to inform them and offer a different perspective on current events. It can also provide additional information and thus create a network of important content where everyone can find something. Do you know about Torball? Anne-Julie Clary? Héliotrope? etc. These daily actors work every day to inform you, make you think, and free your mind.
So, trying not to fall into a long tirade, we confirm that this day is indispensable. Freedom is hard to acquire and maintain in Nice as elsewhere in France. Less so in our territory than elsewhere in the world, true, but how hard it is to prove our will in the face of constant fratricidal conflict. How hard it is to find sufficient resources to publish every day. How difficult it is to find sufficient financial fuel each month to continue informing you. Thus, today more than tomorrow, the press in general, and Nice Premium in particular, needs your help and your critical mind because mankind has a vital need: to possess accurate information to form opinions or advance their ideas.
To avoid falling into sensationalism and not promote negativity, Nice Premium selects every day, the events, personalities, or news that will offer you real added value.
If our goal of different, free, independent, interesting, and open information interests you, do not hesitate to support us, talk about us or simply write to us.
Thousands of you follow us every day, prove your strength by giving us yours.
World Press Day: A Seminar and 18 Years Later
This seminar took place in Windhoek (Namibia), in 1991, leading to the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration on the promotion of independent and pluralistic media.
The Windhoek Declaration called for the establishment, maintenance, and promotion of a pluralistic, free, and independent press and emphasized the importance of a free press for the development and preservation of democracy within a state, as well as for economic development. World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3rd each year, the date on which the Windhoek Declaration was adopted.
A little reminder…
Even though World Press Freedom Day has been celebrated since 1993, it is rooted even deeper in the history of the United Nations.
Today, worldwide, May 3rd has become an occasion to inform the public about violations of the right to freedom of expression and the moment to remember that several journalists risk death or imprisonment while reporting the news to people.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which coordinates the activities highlighting May 3rd each year, World Press Freedom Day is:
– a day of action, which promotes and launches initiatives aimed at defending press freedom.
– a day of evaluation, to assess the state of press freedom around the world.
– a day of reminder, to remind states of the commitments they have made towards press freedom.
– a day of alert, to alert the public and raise awareness about the cause of press freedom.
– a day of reflection, to stimulate debate among media professionals on issues affecting press freedom and professional ethics.
– a day of commemoration in memory of journalists who lost their lives while practicing their profession.
– a day of support for the media that are victims of actions that hinder press freedom or aim to abolish it.
Only one weapon… the press
Press freedom is considered a cornerstone of human rights and a guarantee that other rights will be respected. It promotes transparency and good governance and represents, for society, the assurance that true justice will prevail. Press freedom is the bridge that connects understanding and knowledge.
It is essential for the exchange of ideas between nations and cultures, which itself is a condition leading to lasting understanding and cooperation.
