For a long time, men were powerless against the scourge of epidemics. They elicited contradictory reactions, from collective hysteria to the emergence of new fraternities, embodied by the confraternities of Penitents.
The last one to leave a mark in the collective memory of Nice is recorded negatively: it was the cholera that, in 1832, threatened Nice and was averted, as it was understood at the time, by the conjunction of divine intercession and human medicine. This fear left a magnificent memory in stone, the Church of the Vow, and a tradition, the solemn procession.
This Sunday, Christian Estrosi, Eric Ciotti, Bishop Jean Bonfils, and Father François-Régis Jamain will renew the Vow of Nice, a Niçoise tradition celebrating its 184th anniversary this year.
