It is at the Théâtre de la Cité that Nice will contribute to the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women” on Friday, November 25, 2011. This day, which rallies the whole of France, aims to remind us of our rights and duties as citizens and to fight against the injustices faced by many women.
On Friday, November 25, 2011, the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women” takes place. In Nice, starting at 8:30 pm, there will be a debate performance, “The Unspoken Wounds,” at the Théâtre de la Cité on November 25, 26, and 27.
This day, declared a “Great National Cause 2010” by the government, stems from the law of July 9, 2010, enhancing the protection of women. Thus, each November 25, during the UN’s international day, the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women” is held.
Of course, beyond the debate performance, this day allows for awareness-raising in schools and through events, reaching the new generation who must absolutely not replicate the past of a patriarchal society.
Today, in some countries around the world, women are forcibly married, repudiated, persecuted, subjected to female genital mutilation, beaten, prostituted, victims of so-called honor crimes, raped in times of war.
A study conducted by the World Health Organization, based on interviews with 24,000 people in 10 different countries, shows a prevalence of domestic violence varying between sites from 15 to 70% of the women interviewed.
Violence affects all social strata of society; it is more necessary than ever to mobilize public opinion against these discriminations.
This day must remind women around the world of the rights they took centuries to obtain, and their duties, but also remind all countries’ governments of the equality between the two sexes in all respects.
More than 900,000 women reported experiencing physical or sexual violence in 2010. And for half of them, this violence took place within their own homes.
Let us not stand by and do nothing in the face of this most degrading violence, especially for those who inflict it…
