On May 19th at 6:30 PM, there will be a conference entitled “The Amphitheater of Cemenelum: Results of the Latest Excavation Campaign” at the Le Bocal theater.
The amphitheater on the hill of Cimiez is one of the most significant archaeological remains of the ancient city of Cemenelum. Partially preserved at a height of 7 meters and of elliptical shape (69 meters long and 57 meters wide), the amphitheater could accommodate approximately 4000 spectators in total, spread over several rows of bleachers. Archaeological excavations conducted by INRAP in 2007 and the City of Nice’s Archaeology Service in 2009 have provided new information on the dating of its construction, which can now be placed at the end of the 1st century AD. Moreover, thanks to the discovery of pavement remnants that occupied the passage of the north gate, the arena path can now be restored to its original level for the public.
The Speaker:
Alain GRANDIEUX: Archaeologist and ceramologist, City of Nice’s Archaeology Service – Associate Researcher at CCJ-MMSH in Aix-en-Provence and leader of the latest excavation campaign on the Cemenelum amphitheater
Practical Information:
An aperitif will be offered after the conference, around 7:45 PM. A participation fee of 2 euros per person is requested. It is recommended to reserve with Mémoires Millénaires at 04 93 17 75 52 as the number of seats is limited to 50 people (maximum capacity of the theater).
A presentation of the main buildings of the city of Cemenelum and the ongoing research program on the site will also be discussed during this conference.
