Nice, the green city, wants to maintain the distinction of the “4 flowers.”

Nice, which aims to be the “green city of the Mediterranean,” has held the 4-flower distinction, the highest level, since 1975. This distinction is awarded by the National Council of Flowered Towns and Villages (CNVVF).

This nationally recognized label rewards municipalities for their commitment to improving quality of life and the overall strategy of attractiveness implemented through flowering, landscaping, and greenery. Subject to confirmation or revision, inspections in the form of visits are regularly conducted to check the condition of the sites.

That was the mission of the jury members of the 2020 flowering competition, Thibaut Beautรฉ, President of the National Council of Flowered Towns and Villages (CNVVF), Zoรฉ Cavallin, project manager for the CNVVF, and Stรฉphane Fournier, head of flowering for the city of Velizy-Villacoublay. They visited Nice last week and met with Pierre-Paul Lรฉonelli, who represented the Mayor of Nice.

On this occasion, the flowering jury was able to discover the city’s most iconic spaces: Promenade du Paillon, Sosno Garden, green corridors, Promenade des Anglais, Villa Massรฉna, Alsace Lorraine Garden, eco-valley, Grand Park of the Plaine du Var, and Phoenix Park.

Pierre-Paul Lรฉonelli also presented the current and upcoming projects to the jury members to increase green space by 50 hectares in the area, aiming to reduce urban heat islands and preserve the area’s biodiversity.

The hosts were able to view the numerous projects that will be carried out in the near future, such as the greening of schoolyards (Jules Ferry in Nice Centre and Marcel Pagnol in Nice East – Ariane), the extensions of the Promenade du Paillon
and the Grand Landscape Park of the Plaine du Var.

Additionally, a vegetative decoration is planned for the Grand Dรฉpart of the Tour de France in two weeks.

The occasion also served as a reminder that since 2008, Nice has been continuously increasing its flowering and expanding the number of green spaces.

  • 417 hectares of green nature spaces throughout the territory, 178 parks and gardens including 3 large parks, representing an additional 37 hectares of green spaces gained
  • 6 km of bus lanes transformed into “green promenades” and bike paths, creating garden streets in the spirit of the Consiglio d’Ornato

-70% of schools equipped with an educational garden,

  • 5 community gardens and 2 solidarity vegetable gardens
  • 270 employees from 10 different professions (gardeners, landscape architects, botanists, engineers, technicians…) work daily and can rely on the municipal horticultural production center that produces 410,000 plants per year.
