On May 14th at 3:00 PM, a conference titled “Nationality and the Consent of Peoples in the Formation of Italian Unity” will be held at the Theatre of Photography and Image. It will be presented by Elisa Mongiano.
Questions concerning nationality were important in the formation of Italian unity. The themes of nationality occupy political literature committed to constructing, by drawing on Italian history and culture, a national identity and consciousness based on the community of territory, language, religion, and customs. The principle of nationality is the cornerstone of the national movement’s programs and the propaganda efforts of the patriots.
However, the principle of nationality also plays an essential role in the context of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the European powers, particularly with France and England. Through events and the analysis of official acts and diplomatic correspondence, the conference will highlight how this principle was utilized during the years and months leading up to the formation of the Kingdom of Italy.
Elisa Mongiano is a professor of the history of law at the University of Piemonte Orientale “Amadeo Avogadro” and a member of the “Italian Society of the History of Law.” She also participates in local and national research projects conducted by the Universities of Turin and Eastern Piedmont and the Italian Ministry of University.
Free admission subject to available seating.
