December 16, 2011. You have to go back that far to find the last championship victory of Nice Volley Ball. It was against Chaumont, and the Eagles were then firmly in second place in the championship, just a single point behind the leader Avignon. But since then, it’s been a free fall for Mladen Kasic’s players. Four consecutive defeats have left the Azuréens at 6th place in the standings, not qualifying for the playoffs.

Tiago De Souza, asset No. 1

Tonight, on the court of Plessis Robinson (12th), Nice must stop this series unworthy of a contender for Ligue A. More than just ending this terrible streak, the Eagles must win to keep hope of competing in the playoffs. The volleyball players are only one point behind Alès (5th), but another defeat would be catastrophic for the club. They can count on Brazilian Tiago De Souza, the club’s top scorer and the fifth top scorer in the Ligue B championship with 247 points scored for the blue and yellow team.

Harnes/St Nazaire in the spotlight

If the Eagles now must rely only on themselves to hope to catch the playoffs, they hope to count on some underperformances from their direct competitors. Alès (5th) is hosting St Brieuc, last in the championship, but watch out for the trap for Avignon (2nd) traveling to Orange (10th). Finally, the highlight of this 16th Ligue B day will see the leader Harnésien face off against St Nazaire, surprisingly third in the standings and victor over Nice (3-0) two weeks ago.
