Nice Volley-ball is one of the newest clubs to emerge in Nice, having been created only in 1976. This does not prevent it from being among the leading clubs of the Côte d’Azur city today. Relegated to Pro B (second division) during the 2006/2007 season, NVB has been striving ever since to regain its position in the national elite of French volleyball. “The elevator could have been activated last season, the beginnings were promising, we were leading the championship after a few games. But it ended on a sour note, as we suffered many injuries within the group where the atmosphere gradually deteriorated…” as explained by Alain Griguer, president of Nice Volley-ball for nearly 20 years now. The only real satisfaction of the previous season was the integration of promising young players into the professional group.
Training is an asset for the club’s survival but remains improvable for Alain Griguer: “Our youth training is insufficient. We are trying to set up a selection process among our young players to be able to train high-level male and female players. This selection process is not the most conducive to training, but our lack of budget prevents us from investing at this level today.” NVB finds itself in a difficult position between its desire to welcome as many participants as possible and its budgetary restrictions. Despite all these elements, NVB achieves very good results in its youth categories, such as the 4th place for the female junior team in the French Cup this season.
Today, NVB seeks to build a club that matches its ambitions, with the three keys “spectacle, excellence, and training” as its motto. An increasing budget, significant activity during the summer transfer window, the arrival of a new coach (Léonard Bilic), everything is being put in place for NVB to become a major force in French then European Volleyball. “Our ambition could be fulfilled if we had a venue allowing us to offer a high-quality spectacle. We have very good relations with the current municipal team, and we can feel the strong desire to give a new impetus to high-level sports in Nice. For now, we are waiting to see. Our main objective remains to retain our spectators, our sponsors, and to work in cooperation with the city.”
