Nice Volleyball defeated Cannes last night at the Palmeira hall in a highly contested derby. The team from Nice won 3 sets to 0 and climbed to 7th place in the championship. Cannes are in last place.
This marks the third victory of the season for the players of Mladen Kasic. Following their successes at Sète (3-0) and against Ajaccio (3-1), the teammates of captain Zeljko Coric continued their momentum and subdued their rival, Cannes, 3 sets to 0. Thus, the team from Nice remains undefeated at home: 2/2.
A Deceptive Score
Since the beginning of the season, Coric and his teammates have been making swift progress. Success is not unfamiliar to them. Indeed, none of the 6 matches played have resulted in a 5th set. Two victories at 3-0 and one at 3-1. Two defeats 3 sets to 0 and one loss at 3-1. Either Nice dominates the match significantly, or the opposite happens. Yesterday, the score clearly favored the Niçois. If we look at the results of each set, the match was much closer: 31-29, 29-27, and 25-21. The Cannes team had some set points in the first two rounds that could have changed the outcome. But it was the residents of the Palmiera hall who managed the crucial points better and extricated themselves from some precariously bad situations.
Robin Overbeeke, the Flying Dutchman
It wasn’t just the Dutch footballers who shone last night (2-0 victory against France). Niçois opposite hitter Robin Overbeeke confirmed the praise he has received since the beginning of the season. Solid in serving, strong in attack, and good in defense, the Dutchman who recently arrived on the Côte d’Azur was undoubtedly the man of the match with 25 points.
This victory allows the Niçois to rise to 7th place in the championship, just ahead of Toulouse, their opponent next weekend. The Niçois will then host Chaumont at the Palmeira hall.
