Cyclone Chido struck the archipelago of Mayotte this weekend, causing significant human and material damage. The city of Nice and the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis have announced several support measures to assist the affected residents.

This Tuesday, December 17, during a gathering at the City Hall, Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice and President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, announced an emergency plan. The City and the Metropolis are releasing an exceptional aid of 100,000 euros that will be awarded to the Red Cross to support the disaster victims.

“My thoughts are primarily with the inhabitants of Mayotte, severely hit by Cyclone Chido. As our compatriots in Mayotte lack everything […] it seemed essential to me to show our solidarity,” declared Christian Estrosi.

The mobilization does not stop there. The Eau d’Azur utility teams will be ready to intervene in the reconstruction of water and sanitation networks damaged by the cyclone. An expertise deemed crucial to help Mayotte recover quickly.

A cash collection open to all

To strengthen the aid, the Communal Social Action Center (CCAS) has launched a cash collection. Residents of Nice can now participate online through a dedicated form. This initiative aims to mobilize the local population and demonstrate unity in the face of this disaster.

Christian Estrosi added: “Seeing these images of devastation is particularly upsetting. I want to tell all the people of Mayotte that they are in our hearts and thoughts.” This initiative is part of a desire to act quickly to provide concrete support to the affected families.

Cyclone Chido has highlighted the archipelago’s vulnerability to natural disasters. With this mobilization, Nice and its metropolis show their solidarity with the inhabitants of Mayotte in this ordeal. To participate in the collection, go to: https://formulaires.mesdemarches.nicecotedazur.org.
