For the past two days, the prosecutor Eric de Montgolfier has been scandalously attacking the Municipal Police of the city of Nice.
He is not targeting unpleasant cases like those recently cropping up among the high-ranking members of the National Police, in Lyon or Lille for example, but is instead reproaching municipal police officers for acting too much and too quickly on the ground.
Claiming that the safety of people and property should remain the responsibility of the State, prosecutor De Montgolfier wants the Municipal Police to be disinterested and to function merely as a support or a relay.
The Municipal Police is a full-fledged police force. It significantly contributes to the security of our city, and when the residents of Nice are attacked, they do not worry about whether the officers coming to their aid are paid by the State or the city. The officer pursued by Eric de Montgolfier for hitting a pedestrian was actually on his way to the scene of an ongoing assault!
In light of the State’s withdrawal from security – and justice! – matters, we are pleased to rely on our municipal officers, who must compensate for the staff reductions in the National Police implemented by the UMP (what does Mr. Estrosi think?) and the courts’ leniency towards offenders (what does Mr. De Montgolfier think?).
Since it seems that prosecutor De Montgolfier will end his career here, he should try, in his remaining years, to finally pursue those who truly make life difficult for the residents of Nice.
Because it is not his minor media appearances that have managed to reduce insecurity in our city during his tenure, quite the contrary.
