On Monday at 2:30 PM at Pierre Merle School – Place Arson and at 6:30 PM at Jules Ferry School – 1 rue Jeanne Juga, as part of “Nissa XXI”*, two bilingual French/Niçard plaques and two signs will be unveiled, one in honor of Pierre Merle and the second in tribute to Jules Ferry.
Pierre Merle, a highly respected teacher and Niçois hero of World War II who joined the Resistance, will be honored at the school where he was arrested by the Gestapo on January 10, 1944.
Jules Ferry (1832-1893), a lawyer and French politician, is the father of secular, free, and compulsory primary education. A fervent republican, he aspired for all children of the Republic to have access to free education and learn to become citizens.
The program of actions and activities named “Nissa XXI” has been offered in the schools and leisure centers of the city since the beginning of this school year.
