Noise pollution at Nice Airport

Christian ESTROSI, Member of Parliament, Mayor of Nice, and President of the Nice Cote d’Azur Metropolis, is satisfied with the initial measures taken by Nice Cote d’Azur Airport to reduce noise pollution.

“Following my interventions: on February 22, during the session of the Airport’s Environmental Advisory Commission, and on June 1 during the supervisory board meeting, I am pleased that this body, once again convened today, has approved the airport’s environmental charter, specifically announcing the immediate closure, between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM, of the KILO business aviation parking lot located along the Promenade des Anglais. This was an important measure that I had personally called for on numerous occasions.

To complement this measure, the relocation of the private jet startup area to zones further away from residents’ homes will be implemented during 2013. Indeed, starting this summer, a noise experiment at three new locations will be conducted jointly by the Airport services and those of the City of Nice, which will help select the best site.

I also take note of the airport’s intention to equip itself before 2014 with startup stations having electrical and air conditioning supplies, thus avoiding the use of extremely noisy APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) generators that are the main source of noise pollution.

I welcome these initial advances which, thanks to the goodwill of everyone involved (the Metropolis’ elected officials, residents’ associations, the airport’s board, and state services), will considerably alleviate the disturbances suffered by residents.

Naturally, I remain extremely vigilant and attentive to ensuring that these initial measures are effective and followed by others. Indeed, I do not forget my goal of banning all commercial night flights between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM, except of course for delayed or emergency postal flights. Regarding business aviation, I seek its ban from 10:00 PM.

I am convinced that it is possible to reconcile the necessary development of our airport platform with the quality of life and health of the residents,” declared Christian ESTROSI.
