The Italian goalkeeper has signed a one-year contract with the Nice club. He will serve as a backup behind Marcin Bulka.

OGC Nice is finally concluding its last deal of the summer. In search of a new backup goalkeeper since the departure of Kasper Schmeichel in the final hours of the transfer window, it is the Italian Salvatore Sirigu who has been chosen by the club’s management. The goalkeeper was on trial during the two weeks of the international break. He had been a free agent since his contract with Fiorentina ended last June. This allows OGC Nice to recruit him outside the summer transfer window.

The Italian international was also present at the Parc des Princes on Friday night. At 36 years old, he meets all the criteria sought by the management with his experience and knowledge of the league. His profile seems compatible with the backup role.

A great experience in Ligue 1

Sirigu played for six years at PSG before returning to Italy and playing at various clubs in his homeland (Torino, Genoa, Napoli, and Fiorentina). The goalkeeper did not play much at his last club, with only two appearances. Indeed, he has not been spared from injuries lately. Last March, he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, among other injuries.

The trial period was used to assess his current physical condition, a genuine concern and point of discussion in the matter. However, the Italian proved his abilities during this week of testing. “Sirigu is a great goalkeeper. Salvatore can be a great asset to the team. We are evaluating his physical capacity, not the player,” said Francesco Farioli about him in a press conference on Thursday.

Since then, the Italian goalkeeper has signed a one-year contract with the Gym. “Nice has great ambitions, and so do I. We are made to work well together.
