OGC Nice achieved a resounding feat in Marseille as part of the Round of 32 in the Coupe de France (4-5). With a revamped team affected by injuries, Nice shattered the Olympian defense. A record number of goals in the club’s history at the Vélodrome.
In light of the squad crafted by Claude Puel to challenge Marseille, no one had high hopes for Nice’s chances. Away, against a well-rested Marseille team after their postponed match and equipped with a full squad, Nice was not the favorite.
Yet, against all odds, OGC Nice claimed a historic victory. Never had the Azureans scored so many goals in Marseille in the club’s history. It’s also the first time this season that the Eagle players scored so many goals in one match. Bosetti, Maupay, Diawara with an own goal, Brüls, and Abriel were the tormentors of Marseille.
Without any complexes, Nice’s youth made a meal of a Phocean team missing in action on defense. With this success, Nice reaches the Round of 16 in the Coupe de France, just three rounds from a final at the Stade de France. But most importantly, Claude Puel’s men gave the most beautiful Christmas gift, albeit a bit late, to their supporters. A victory over the enemy and an opponent eliminated from both national cups, forcing them to achieve an exploit in the league to qualify for the European Cup.
Morally, this victory is perfect. However, from a sporting perspective, not everything was perfect in this match. The attack was entirely satisfactory with the young players (Bosetti and Maupay) taking risks with the help of the regular starters (Brüls and Mendy). Special mention to Neal Maupay, present in all duels, constantly provoking. The young 18-year-old forward single-handedly dismantled the Marseille defense.
Conversely, the defense took a hit, conceding 4 goals. Too tender against the Olympian attackers, Nice’s rearguard gave their fans some cold sweats. The young goalkeeper Hassen also had a complicated match despite making decisive saves. No consequences on the final result.
