Nearly 5 months after their last group stage match, OGC Nice entered the final stages of the Conference League with an away game in Moldova. A tight match, played in difficult conditions, but which turned in favor of the Aiglons.
Last night, OGC Nice under Didier Digard faced Sheriff Tiraspol in the first leg of the round of 16 of the competition. A dull encounter between two teams focused more on their good defensive organization than offensive exploits.
In the additional time of a rather uneventful half without chances, the Gym nevertheless managed to score the only goal of the match thanks to a missile (or a failed cross) by the young left-back Ayoub Amraoui.
In the second half, Nice forwards Laborde and Moffi were disappointing with the rare attacking balls. Sheriff, however, raised their level of play to the point of giving Schmeichel a few scares. Even though the Moldovans pushed towards the end of the match, collectively and tactically, Nice deserved to win this initial clash.
With this victory, OGC Nice has an advantage in reaching the quarter-finals before playing the return leg scheduled for this Thursday, March 16, at 6:45 PM at the Allianz Riviera. Noteworthy is the significant absence of Nice’s captain Dante, who is suspended.
