OGC Nice: Favre has chosen his new goalkeeper

Latest News

After 6 years of good and loyal service, Walter Benitez has left the Gym to take on a new challenge. Although Marcin Bulka has permanently joined OGC Nice, the club from the Côte d’Azur is left with only one reliable goalkeeper. Lucien Favre has already targeted a compatriot to take on this number 1 role.

A big name was mentioned by L’Équipe yesterday as the next goalkeeper for Nice. Indeed, Yann Sommer, the captain and undisputed starter of the Swiss national team and Borussia Monchengladbach, is reportedly in the sights of his former coach (2014-2015) who had brought him to Germany.

During his first stint on the Côte d’Azur, the Swiss coach had already attempted to bring in Sommer. This time, things seem really promising, and an agreement has allegedly been reached between the Swiss goalkeeper and the Gym. After a disappointing season with his club, the player with 71 international caps might be keen to find one last challenge at 33. In Nice, he would have the opportunity to compete in a European cup and add experience to a young squad.

Discussions between the German club and OGC Nice are ongoing. The current value of Yann Sommer is estimated to be 5 million euros, but he might leave Gladbach for a lower sum.

If this transfer were to be confirmed, it would be a major coup for the Gym, securing an experienced goalkeeper, one of the best in the Bundesliga over the last decade, at a low cost.
