This Sunday, OGC Nice faced Le Havre in a crucial duel in the race to avoid relegation. The match ended in a logical draw that satisfied neither the Eagles nor the Normans in the standings (1-1). In this tense end of the season, the Gym must remain vigilant.
A draw that benefits no one! In a few words, that’s how the Nice – Le Havre match, held this Sunday at the Allianz Riviera, could be described. Engaged in a relentless relegation battle, neither team managed to get the upper hand over its opponent. Despite a comeback after conceding the first goal, OGC Nice may have regrets about not taking advantage of the situation in the lower part of the table.
Before that, Claude Puel made bold choices by benching Isak Jansson, Sofiane Diop, and Juma Bah at kickoff. Substituted at halftime last week against Strasbourg (1-3), the three players did not return to the bench for the second half. They started this match against Le Havre as substitutes. On the brighter side, Ali Abdi returned from injury in the starting eleven.
Nice punished before halftime
This encounter between two low-ranked teams nonetheless showcased an interesting football game. Yehvann Diouf kept his team in the game with a near-heroic trio of saves against Samatta. At the front, Mohamed-Ali Cho lost his face-off against Diaw. Vanhoutte’s attempts went outside the rival goal. The Gym did not capitalize on its chances before the break! Gradually, the refereeing decisions led to much frustration on the part of OGC Nice.
Less focused, Peprah Oppong’s teammates eventually conceded just before the break (41’, 0-1). Left alone, Aly Samatta had all the time to adjust Diouf. The Tanzanian international hadn’t scored a single goal in Ligue 1 since joining Le Havre last summer. Immediately after, OGC Nice thought they had responded with a goal by Elye Wahi. Making a good run behind the opposing defense, the Eagles’ striker was rightly flagged offside. Once again, the Nice team had to chase the score. And that hasn’t really worked out for them this season.
The Eagles respond
Trailing, Claude Puel’s men immediately wanted to come back in the game. With persistence and determination, OGC Nice got back on the scoreboard (59′, 1-1). Vigilant and opportunistic, Ali Abdi found the back of the net following a Nice set play. Everything was up for grabs again! It was close to seeing the Eagles take the lead.
Claude Puel played his final cards to unlock the situation. On the other side, Mory Diaw—the Le Havre goalkeeper—shined against a superb half-volley from Clauss. The Norman goalkeeper kept the suspense alive till the end of the match. There would be no more, and OGC Nice had to settle for the draw point. Sitting 15th in the standings, the Eagles missed the opportunity to overtake their opponent of the day and make a significant step towards staying in Ligue 1.
The next match is scheduled for next Saturday, April 18 for the Gym. In the account of the 30th matchday of Ligue 1, OGC Nice will travel to Lille. Kick-off is scheduled for 9 PM against the Mastiffs.
