From now until March 4th, Parc Phoenix transforms into the home port of the Oïkos. The boat, piloted by Stéphane Narvaez, becomes the symbol of the ecological struggle and the preservation of the sea.
A few days before the arrival of the first participants of the Vendée Globe, it’s hard not to take an interest in the maritime environment. However, there is no competition at Parc Phoenix. Stéphane Narvaez’s boat is the first production sailboat to have sailed around the world in reverse without stopping and without an engine. The native of St Laurent du Var is showcasing his sailboat to raise awareness among the less informed about environmental and ecological issues, the GIC (Global Energy Challenges). The CE2 and CM1 students from Michelis2 School in St Laurent participated in the event by making a sail.
With no motorized assistance, it’s all about using renewable energies only. Sea pollution is a daily scourge. Trash ships, wild degassing; the sea must no longer become a gigantic dump for unscrupulous captains. Today, it is a real challenge to preserve the marine environment.
After presenting the sailboat Oïkos and the many challenges awaiting the navigator, a debate on the issue of autonomy with respect to renewable energies attracted the curious, along with the screening of the documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michel Pitiot, “Planet Ocean”. The exhibition by Marianne Fournier, a Nice-based artist, and the participation of volunteers from the Association of Small Hands complement this two-month event. Then the sailor will depart on April 21, 2014, for the Four Seasons in the Southern Seas (4SMS).
