Police intrusion yesterday morning at 1 Avenue Clรฉmenceau.

What serious offenses could the peaceful families have committed, occupying the vacant building requisitioned at 1 Avenue G. Clรฉmenceau by associations and citizens of Nice for whom the right of asylum still has meaning? What heinous crimes could justify the extreme violence of the police officers’ raid this morning at six o’clock and the use of disproportionate means?
When all the latest decisions of the Administrative Court of Nice have favored the asylum seekers against the judicial persistence of the Prefect, ordering him to house them, as they are regularly sheltered on our soil?
Why then these completely excessive damages unrelated to the situation during the police intervention where doors are unnecessarily damaged, causing distress to children? The contradictory and embarrassed statements of police officers about the search for families in an irregular situation have been contradicted by the facts since the police left empty-handed; there is no family in an irregular situation in this building!!
It is serious that in our country today, the most basic rules of law are thus flouted when the representatives of “public order” justify, in the name of a supposed “administrative police operation,” procedures that are not even authorized by a “preliminary investigation”?
Should we resign ourselves to seeing the highest authorities of our country encouraging behaviors denounced by international bodies as violating the most basic human rights?
We do not accept this worrying drift as inevitable and call on all local leaders, from the Mayor to the Prefect, to focus primarily on respecting the right of asylum rather than trying by all means to criminalize those who act in solidarity to make up for the State’s shortcomings in this area!
