Opinion: The Future of the Left in Nice

Latest News

Patrick Allemand – who will lead the list formed by PS, UDE, and a few associations – raised a real issue: the divided left is at great risk in the municipal elections, and he has called for “unity”.

The response from communist Robert Injey – one of the masterminds of another list, VIVA! – is a clear rejection, delivered in a “bloody” tone!

The fracture between the three lefts goes beyond the municipal elections, it is deep, further fueled by personal factors.

For months, men and women, whether members of left-wing forces or not, have been working on building a genuine alternative for Nice with Viva!. It is in this context that Patrick Allemand issues an ultimatum to the left! It is a non-event.

For months, Patrick Allemandโ€™s former partners have abandoned him for both substantive and formal reasons.

For months and years, left-wing men and women have been in deep disagreement with the choices Patrick Allemand has defended. From unconditional support for Hollande and Valls’ disastrous policies to calling to vote Macron in the first round, the situation is unbearable. A compatibility with Macron that is still evident today, as outside the local PS the only support for Patrick Allemand is the Union of Democrats and Ecologists, whose national leaders actively support E. Macron. One cannot claim to be left-wing when in opposition and support a right-wing policy when friends are in power.

For months, I have been saying, along with others, that Patrick Allemand, for all these reasons, cannot in any way federate the left. This remains true today. And if he is really concerned about the future of the left in Nice, the best thing he can do is withdraw. After forty years of accumulated mandates, it is probably time for him to move on to something elseโ€ฆ

Today, a new chapter of the left in Nice is being written. With men and women coming from different backgrounds; from the associative movement, unionism, or political forces.

Today, the cornerstone of this left under reconstruction is the Viva! list, led by a woman from civil society known for her commitments to defending human rights and supported by FI, PCF, Gรฉnรฉration.S, and Ensemble!.

The future of the left in Nice is thereโ€ฆ.

Robert Injey, PCF06
