Starting this Sunday, August 10, the Alpes-Maritimes department will be under an orange heatwave alert. Temperatures will range between 37ยฐC and 39ยฐC during the day inland. This heatwave episode will persist at least until Tuesday.
Mรฉtรฉo France forecasts temperatures reaching 39ยฐC this Sunday. This will mainly affect inland areas until Tuesday. However, the heatwave episode could extend by a few more days. In response to this risk, the municipality has activated a vigilance unit. The goal is to prevent the effects of heat on the elderly, children, people with disabilities, or those in severe poverty, as well as on all residents.
In Nursing Homes for the Elderly (EHPAD), the blue plan is activated. Each facility has an air-conditioned room. The staff ensures the hydration and support of the residents. Elderly or disabled people living outside can also be accommodated there.
The social link service for seniors manages a registry of 2,513 isolated people. They regularly receive preventive messages. During a heatwave, they are called every 48 hours. CCAS agents make home visits to ensure their health and respond if necessary. More than 1,500 fans have been distributed to registered people who do not have air conditioning.
The Home Autonomy Service intensifies its support. Trained agents escort seniors to cool places. They can also be accommodated in the CCAS air-conditioned spaces, in EHPADs, or in cooled public buildings.
Partner associations complement the system: ABRI, Azur Dรฉveloppement Service, French Red Cross, Oxycourses, Pรฉnitents Blancs, Petits Frรจres des Pauvres, Abandoned Old Age Protection Work, and Senior Compagnie Ouest. Solidarity restaurants, accessible by registration, remain open. The seniors’ centers continue their summer activities.
Support for vulnerable populations
CCAS intervenes with isolated or homeless individuals. Preventive information is disseminated in shelters, day centers, family homes, and social residences.
Food assistance is strengthened. Additional meals are provided at the XVe Corps day center. Water bottles are distributed in host locations. Solidarity breakfasts are organized at 17, rue El Nouzah, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
Starting this Sunday, the night shelter on rue Trachel will be open 24/7. It will complement the XVe Corps day center, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. People can benefit from an air-conditioned environment, water, and food baskets.
Authorities remind us of a few simple gestures: drink water regularly, avoid alcohol, limit physical exertion, wet the body and fan oneself, eat sufficiently, and keep your home cool. Spending time in air-conditioned places, checking on vulnerable loved ones, and staying alert for signs of heatstroke are essential precautions.
In case of discomfort, it is advised to contact a doctor. Updated information is available on the social media pages of the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes and Mรฉtรฉo France.
The city of Nice urges each resident to remain vigilant and pay attention to vulnerable individuals in their surroundings.
