Paris’ Bid for the 2024 Olympics: Denis Masseglia Stays the Course

Latest News

After Denis Masseglia, president of the CNOSF, the President of the Republic Franรงois Hollande expressed support for Paris’s bid for the 2024 Olympics. However, the Olympic rules state that it must be the City of Paris that submits the bid… So?

jo_2024-3.jpg The Mayor of Paris recalled the history of Parisian bids, which lost for the 2008 and 2012 Games. And suggested, โ€œHaving dreams is good, realizing them is even better. But I am not in the race for dreams. I know what happens when dreams collide with harsh reality.โ€

Beyond the rhetorical expressions, the Mayor of Paris mainly clarified the three essential conditions, in her view, to advance the Paris 2024 bid: transparency and ethics in how the city bids are handled (by the IOC), a new economic model, and an Olympic project with an environmental focus.

Present in Bangkok, where the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) was held until Saturday, November 8, Denis Masseglia clarified his view regarding the position of the Mayor of Paris. โ€œAnne Hidalgo is not closing the door, she is open to discussion,โ€ commented the CNOSF president. The IOC’s Director-General announced that proposals would be made during the IOC General Assembly on December 8 and 9 in Monaco. These are expected to impact the selection process of host cities for the Games.โ€

Careful not to engage in point-counterpoint, the CNOSF president expressed being “confident” about the upcoming discussions with Anne Hidalgo. โ€œThe conclusions of the feasibility study should perfectly align with the conditions set by the Mayor of Paris. But everything in its own time.โ€
