On Sunday, April 23, the French people made their choice by placing Emmanuel Macron at the forefront in the first round of the presidential election, with Marine Le Pen in second place.
By putting Emmanuel Macron in the lead, they have given themselves the opportunity to make the bet of optimism and the choice of hope on May 7.
Of course, it is out of the question for any of our votes to go to Le Pen. We do not equate a Republican, with whom we may have disagreements, with the party of hatred, xenophobia, racism, and anti-Semitism. With the party that does not deny its origins and whose candidate has just reopened the debate on France’s responsibility in the Vel d’Hiv roundup.
But abstaining or voting blank is dangerous and also favors the FN. Marine Le Pen’s score will be seen as the barometer of the decline of those values that constitute the greatness of France. That is why blank votes and abstention are dangerous.
It is finally dangerous because, in a devastated political landscape undergoing reformation, the level of Marine Le Pen’s score will determine the nature of the opposition tomorrow. If her score, because of blank votes or abstention, is very high, she will be strengthened and positioned as the principal opponent of the new President, whereas Emmanuel Macron’s future government should mainly face Republican opposition.
