According to this statement from the municipal opposition group Changer d’Ère, the announcement of the future installation of the Casino supermarket “demonstrates that Christian Estrosi has once again deceived the people of Nice with all his might.”
On December 29, 2008, Christian Estrosi stated in Nice Matin:
“I was shocked to learn by reading Nice Matin that the great Escurial, a mythical venue in Nice, was at risk of being turned into a supermarket. I want to reassure all the people of Nice that I will oppose with all my strength this location, which is so dear to everyone, being thus devalued.”
On January 8, 2009, he also stated in the Petit Niçois:
“The great Escurial is part of the heritage of the city of Nice and, as such, must be preserved and restored to once again have a cultural role, at the heart of the life of Nice, of which it has been a jewel since the 1930s.”
Since 2009, the Changer d’Ère group was disturbed to see this cultural venue, to which the people of Nice are attached, transformed into an ordinary supermarket and had expressed its opposition to this project.
The city was unable to purchase this place and we acknowledged it, but the mayor had committed to finding a solution through negotiation with its owner. Since then, no information has been communicated to the municipal council.
In the name of the quality of life of an entire neighborhood, I ask, given the narrow streets around the Grand Escurial, the mayor of Nice to issue a municipal order prohibiting the passage of heavy delivery trucks through the city center. He has the right and the duty to do so!
