The current radicalization of political thought (from all sides) is turning a simple fact into an (unnecessary) news story. One wonders where the opponents of this ongoing tension strategy want to lead… Patrick Mottard’s note seems very relevant in this regard.
I am secular: an assumed, affirmed, and asserted secular, although I strive not to be a “laïcard” (a derogatory term for an overzealous secularist).
However, these stories about nativity scenes are starting to get on my nerves. The nativity scene, especially in Provence (in my native Burgundy, it is much less popular…), is more of a cultural marker than a religious one during the Christmas period, which for the majority of French people is a family celebration, a pause in the middle of a year that passes by so quickly…
Therefore, a nativity scene in a public place doesn’t shock me at all, and to anyone who tells me otherwise, I am ready to list the serious daily violations of secularism of which our Republic is a victim.
As a result, my opponent will understand that the nativity scene is hiding the larger issues.
