PhilidOr Ensemble in Mougins: between “classicism and romanticism”

From the second half of the 18th century, an increasingly rich repertoire began to develop in Europe for wind instrument ensembles.

These ensembles, called “Harmonies,” are composed of pairs of oboes, clarinets, horns, and bassoons grouped in various combinations ranging from duos to octets. The pinnacle of this movement was the creation in Vienna in 1782, by Emperor Joseph II, of the Kaiserlich Kรถniglich Harmonie, an octet comprising the best soloists of the time. This example was immediately followed by the major representatives of the aristocracy, both in Vienna and at all the courts under the political and cultural influence of the Habsburgs. This marked the beginning of a passion for wind instruments that would last about fifty years.

The program presented by the Ensemble PhilidOr aims to explore the golden age of Harmoniemusik through some of the most significant works that Mozart, Beethoven, and Weber composed for a sextet with two clarinets, two horns, and two bassoons.
