Desire: “search for fulfillment, but also an expression of a lack,” recalls philosopher Dominique Lucas de Peslouan. “What we do not have, what we are not, what we lack, that is the object of desire,” said Plato.
Is not what we lack indeed what we need? Desire thus seems to be the awareness of need. But, if desire were only the awareness of a need, how can we explain that people do not just desire what they need? According to Spinoza, “man is a being of desire.”
Perhaps because he is an unfinished being, always lacking something, without knowing exactly what. If man is a being of desire, it is also, and perhaps especially, because he lacks the other, that he is incomplete.
