Three years of waiting for their return to the Côte d’Azur, the fabulous American band Pink Martini will perform in Antibes this Saturday!
On May 11, 2013, the musicians of Pink Martini will make a stop at the Anthea Theatre in Antibes. Pink Martini is the project of pianist Thomas Lauderdale (Portland, Oregon), who in 1994 founded a “little orchestra” to enhance the standard of background music at political gatherings for social purposes.
A year later, Thomas asked China Forbes, with whom he studied at Harvard, to join Pink Martini as a singer/songwriter. The first piece they composed together was an immediate success in France. “Sympathique” was nominated in the categories “Song of the Year” and “Newcomer of the Year” at the Victoires de la Musique. And during the strikes in France, the creed taken from this song – “Je ne veux pas travailler” – was repeated like a mantra.
Pink Martini consists of 12 musicians representing the most diverse languages and musical styles, as evidenced by their work. Their tours – in Europe, Turkey, Taiwan, Japan, Lebanon, and America – have allowed them to absorb even more musical influences. China Forbes sings fluently in five languages, supported by musical accompaniment that oscillates between classical, jazz, and pop.
Their first five albums went gold in France, Canada, Greece, and Turkey and sold over 2.5 million copies.
In 2011, the band released a compilation (“A Retrospective”) and a collaboration with Japanese singer Saori Yuki (“1969”). Since then, the band has also collaborated with numerous symphony orchestras and big names such as Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Henri Salvador, Georges Moustaki, Gus Van Sant, Courtney Taylor-Taylor (Dandy Warhols), and even the original Sesame Street team. In 2011, Storm Lange temporarily replaced China Forbes, who underwent vocal cord surgery.
Now recovered, China will be on stage with Pink Martini this Saturday for a beautiful evening in May!
