On Wednesday, the 1st, two legislative proposals were voted on in a public session at the National Assembly, aiming to establish a requirement for a clean criminal record for candidates in local, presidential, legislative, or senatorial elections.

The deputies demonstrated that restoring integrity in politics transcends all partisan divides. An elected official who has been convicted should no longer stand for re-election.

The text will need to be transmitted to the Senate for a vote, and subsequently promulgated.
