Yesterday morning, at the city hall of Nice, the mayor, Christian Estrosi, announced the various hygiene measures implemented for the municipal elections on March 15 and 22.
It was 11:30 AM when the mayor and his teams appeared before the 252 polling station presidents. In the current context, where the Coronavirus epidemic continues to grow, the authorities have made health decisions.
The first and second rounds will indeed take place as planned, but various measures will be applied in accordance with the recommendations of the national health authorities.
“At the entrance of each polling station, there will be flyers reminding people of the proper hygiene practices to follow. The staff supervising the election will ensure that the measures are respected. Hand sanitizer will be available for voters as well as for the present assessors. A one-meter distance in the queue is to be maintained and it is recommended to bring your own pen. If not, pens will be available and must be placed in baskets designed for this purpose so they can be regularly disinfected” explains Christian Estrosi.
A privacy zone will be created around the different areas, whether it be the voting booth or the signing list.
The mayor wants to be reassuring
Despite the media frenzy and the increase in cases, the mayor wanted to reassure his fellow citizens. “We currently have about a dozen people concerned across the entire city of Nice and I don’t imagine them coming to the polls. We have also recorded 1,200 proxies, a fairly significant number. Many of them come from our nursing homes where the population is more vulnerable. In these establishments, no visits and outings are organized haphazardly. For the rest, life continues to run normally and I see that everyone continues to contribute to the life of the city. This life, whose protection will be enhanced at the polling stations, must continue and allow democracy to take place on Sunday”
