From March 21 to 26, several French schools will host the 27th edition of the Press and Media Week in School®.
Helping students better understand how the media works, developing their critical judgment, and nurturing their interest in current events are the goals of this operation that is more relevant than ever.
In Nice, it was the Rector of the Academy, Emmanuel Ethis, who presented the event to the press this morning.
Like last year, the theme for the 2016 edition will be “FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, IT’S LEARNED.”
Almost exactly one year after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, the presentation of this 27th edition of the Press and Media Week in School® could only begin with an essential look back at the events. Accompanied by Sophie Fouace, representative of the Canopé network, Denis Carreaux, editorial director of the regional daily Nice Matin, and Thierry Sabourdy, director of the radio France Bleu Azur, Emmanuel Ethis, Rector of the Nice Academy, reminded us that the attacks not only impacted millions of individuals but also the way we approach teaching and journalism.
Previously discreet, the debate on freedom of expression has returned to center stage, and from kindergarten to higher education, all students have faced it. In this context, education about media and information has become a priority for the Ministry of Education, which heavily relies on the Press and Media Week in School® to promote it.
Numerous activities on the program
Meetings with press and media professionals, creation of school radios and newspapers, workshops, debates… this is what awaits students from schools that choose to participate. This year, the Minister of National Education, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, even announced the goal of creating a school media outlet in each of these establishments.
This ambitious mission will once again be overseen by the Center for Educational Media and Information Liaison (Clemi), which for over 30 years has been raising awareness among teachers and students about the importance of this education.
Lilia Parisot, director of the Clemi of the Nice Academy, was indeed present this morning to speak about the event. Clearly motivated to be part of this adventure, it’s fair to say she had every reason to be optimistic.
Yesterday, just ten minutes after the opening of registrations, there were already more schools signed up than in the entire last edition.
Driven by current events, the enthusiasm surrounding this Press and Media Week in School® is enormous, and the good news is that there will be room for everyone.
Provided you register before next February 9.
