This morning, a man killed three people, including the church caretaker, and injured many others in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. The assailant was neutralized by the municipal police services.
This morning around 9 a.m., an individual entered the Basilica of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption located on Avenue Jean Médecin. This person allegedly attacked several people inside the religious building with a knife. Two people died and several were injured, including a civilian who took refuge in a bar across the street.
Several explosions were heard in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption caused by the intervention of GIGN teams on site to destroy several suspicious objects.
The Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, Bernard Gonzales, as well as the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, and his first deputy, Anthony Borré, are already on site.
Christian Estrosi, during a press briefing, expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims before providing details on the events. “The perpetrator of these acts kept repeating ‘Allah Akbar’ in front of us while receiving medical treatment on site.”
“Enough is enough, it is time for France to free itself from the laws of peace to definitively eliminate Islamist terrorism from our territory,” stated the mayor of Nice.
The Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, accompanied by Prime Minister Jean Castex, opened a crisis center at Place Beauvau.
IMPORTANT#Nice: a police operation is underway. Avoid the area and follow the instructions. After speaking with the mayor of Nice @cestrosi, I am chairing a crisis meeting at the Ministry of the Interior.

I urge the people of Nice to avoid the Notre Dame area. Bomb disposal experts, police, and firefighters are still on site. What just happened is horrible!

Our country, our city is once again attacked by Islamist barbarism. The church caretaker and another victim were killed; another is injured. Proud of the @PMdeNice who arrested the perpetrator with the support of a terminal. Enough is enough. The state must be uncompromising.
