This afternoon (meeting at 2:30 PM at the Menton-Garavan train station), humanitarian associations and political movements will gather to protest against the hunting of refugees and to demand dignified reception for all because, according to them, “there are no legitimate refugees and those who would not be.”
The organizers highlight the evacuation of the refugee camp in Ventimiglia on September 27 as a bad example, along with the deployment of military and police resources, notably on trains or at stations like Menton Garavan and Nice.
For them, welcoming cannot be limited to the 24,000 refugees considered, a figure far too low, below France’s reception capabilities.
Therefore, they declare that welcoming also means welcoming with dignity. And for that, public policies and public services have an irreplaceable role.
This obviously involves direct means—those of state services—and indirect ones—support for organizations and associations working for the reception and rights of immigrants.
We are still far from achieving this goal.
