#ProtectUrLife, the European initiative for heart and bone health: prevention is better than cure

Latest News

This weekend, Nice and 5 other European cities (Zurich, Barcelona, Munich, Brussels, and Rimini) will come together to focus on prevention by offering their residents a free and open awareness experience.

The launch of the event will take place at 11 Place Massรฉna.

This event, named #ProtectUrLife, is organized at the initiative of Amgen, a leading company in medical biotechnology, and EIT Health, a catalyst for innovation in the service of European citizens’ health.

This educational program located in the heart of the city will allow citizens to become active participants in their health by deepening their knowledge about their bone health and heart health. The initiative offers a new approach to improving the prevention, evaluation, and care of two widespread medical conditions: cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis.

A first initiative called #ProtectUrHeart allowed, in 2016, to gauge the interest of the populations in Nice and the surrounding areas for this type of awareness program. While the 2016 edition focused on preventing cardiovascular diseases, this new event goes further by including the prevention of risk factors for osteoporosis, a condition that affects nearly one in three women after the age of 50.

Eloquent figures in France and across Europe

Cardiovascular diseases are the cause of 45% of deaths in Europe3,4, totaling 4 million people each year, of which 1.4 million are under 75 years old.

A dramatic situation that also has a considerable financial cost, estimated at over 210 billion euros per year.

Additionally, one-third of women over 70 years old will suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis. Hip fractures, in particular, can significantly impact patients’ lives.

This type of accident and previous fractures generate a cost for the European economy estimated at 37 billion per year.
