Latest News

Several thousand people attended the opening ceremony of “Marseille-Provence European Capital of Sport 2017” on Saturday around the Old Port, featuring a circus parade and fireworks, followed by an international competition, Red Bull Crashed Ice. This spectacular event is similar to ski-cross but on ice skates, with the finish line located at the Old Port.

Floats carrying artists and acrobats from the International Biennale of Circus Arts, which will be held in Marseille from January 21 to February 19, first paraded along the port.

In front of the town hall, Mayor Jean-Claude Gaudin officially inaugurated this year of sporting events before fireworks, shot off despite the wind, illuminated the port.

This title highlights the Phocean City’s commitment to sports as a means of social integration; it respects the ethics and role of sports in improving lifestyle quality and the health of Marseillais.

More than 400 activities or events, including 15 national or international championships, are planned throughout the year 2017 and are listed in the complete program.

Created in 2001, ACES (Association of European Capital of Sport) annually awards the European recognitions of “Capital,” “City,” and “Municipality” of sport. These recognitions are given to cities that respect the ethics and role of sports in improving the quality of life, both physical and psychological health, and its integration within diverse social categories.

ACES is an association recognized by the White Paper on Sport and is dedicated to acknowledging sports commitments across European territories.
