Reporty: A left-wing collective denounces the “widespread denunciation and invasion of privacy”

Nothing is better than identifying a “common enemy” to erase or set aside divisions and regain unity, if not in convictions, – at least – in action.

This is what is happening within the left-wing galaxy in Nice, divided into several factions in constant disagreement with each other and the personal ambitions of some.

The argument has been found. The Nice city hall has just launched “Reporty,” a mobile application allowing citizens to film others and send images live to the urban supervision center.

“This is a new step in the security drift of the mayor of Nice,” protest the members of the collective* who criticize the adoption of this measure.

For them: “This all-securing approach is taking it a step further from which it will be challenging to return. Surveillance of everyone against everyone is set as a way of life. Anyone wanting to settle personal scores, harm a neighbor, can use ‘Reporty’ for that. This goes too far.”

The accusation is clear: “The city of Nice wants to make all volunteer citizens auxiliary police officers.”

But, as they say, the left wouldn’t be what we know if it weren’t a living example of the pluralism of ideas!

Municipal councilors from the “Radical and Diverse Left” group, Dominique Boy-Mottard and Marc Concas, have expressed a position that differs from that of the other signatories of the protest.

Here are the reasons for their position…
“Let’s be clear: is there a security problem in Nice? Obviously, yes. Can the mayor be blamed for trying to find solutions? Clearly, no. Even if – as we know since the massive installation of video surveillance – one might not be convinced at first of the effectiveness of the method: in the field of security, equipping the city more is not enough if human resources do not follow.

Provided we integrate this dimension into a potential development of the application and remain vigilant about possible abuses, the current test, which could also be helpful for civil security (accidents, fires…), must, in our view, be carried out to its conclusion to evaluate its relevance.”

Commentary: the left? two people, three ideas – isn’t that what they say?

As for the supposed authoritarian drift of Christian Estrosi: doesn’t he have to face the “all-security” approach of his rival Eric Ciotti in view of the municipal elections in 2020?
