The Nice Academy has launched a rather unprecedented recruitment campaign: they are looking for young retirees to help in the classrooms. The reason: the shortage of teachers affected by COVID-19.
Although the school year started only a few days ago, the number of COVID-19 infections is increasing significantly, and teachers are not spared.
Each year, the Ministry of National Education has a quota of substitute teachers that accounts for 9% of the teachers in public secondary schools. Currently, the absence rate is 7% in France and “should not exceed 15%” in the coming weeks, stated Jean-Michel Blanquer.
To anticipate this shortage of teachers, the Nice Academy has launched a recruitment campaign for young retirees – those who were still teaching last year – so they can replace the teachers affected by COVID-19.

Jean-Michel Blanquer added that resources are currently being deployed to go “beyond the 9% replacement resources and indeed move towards 12-15%.”
