Jean-Christophe Lagarde, president of the Union of Democrats and Independents (UDI), and some 600 elected officials (including 18 deputies and 27 senators) from his political group announced this Wednesday that they will support Alain Juppé in the right-wing primary.
The president of the New Centre, Hervé Morin, will support Bruno Le Maire, deputy of the Eure, a department in the Normandy region that Mr. Morin presides over. He claims to bring along a “hundred elected officials” committed to the “political renewal” promoted by Bruno Le Maire.
Not long ago, the Côte d’Azur deputy Rudy Salles, a loyal supporter of Christian Estrosi in Nice and Eric Ciotti in the department, had declared his support for Nicolas Sarkozy, the first of whom is the economic advisor and the latter the spokesperson in this internal right-wing campaign.
He appears rather isolated in his choice, which is not surprising given his affinity with The Republicans, who have already designated him as the incumbent candidate in his constituency for the 2017 legislative elections.
We will see which of the various options will be preferred by the centrist voters of Nice and its region.
What is certain is that this primary is currently fracturing the national and local political fabric and risks leaving traces in the future.
Are we sure that after battling against each other, everyone will rally behind the winner for the “real” election, the presidential one?
