Road mortality on the rise in Alpes-Maritimes in May 2025

Five people lost their lives on the roads of the Alpes-Maritimes in May 2025, which is three more than the same period last year. The report also indicates an increase in accidents and serious injuries. The prefecture is intensifying awareness campaigns.

The roads of the Alpes-Maritimes were more deadly in May 2025 than in May 2024. According to provisional data from the Departmental Road Safety Observatory (ODSR), five fatalities were recorded last month, compared to two in May of the previous year. This represents an increase of 150%.

The number of bodily accidents also increased: 69 in May 2025 compared to 64 in May 2024. The number of serious injuries rose from 25 to 33. In terms of sanctions, 341 licenses were suspended, 35 more than in May 2024.

Across the first five months of the year, the death toll remained stable. Seventeen fatalities were recorded between January and May 2025, compared to 18 over the same period last year.

Among the victims of May 2025, three were riding motorized two-wheelers. A cyclist and a pedestrian also lost their lives. No fatalities were reported among car drivers or users of motorized personal mobility devices.

The age groups most affected are those aged 25-64, with four deaths, and those 65 and older, with one casualty. No deaths involved individuals under 25.

The fatal accidents occurred in urban areas. There were no deaths on highways or outside urban areas.

Prevention and Awareness in the Summer Program

To address this situation, several prevention actions are planned for June and July. On June 19, an intervention is organized at Sophia Antipolis for employees of the INEO company. On June 22, a prevention day will be held in Saint-Cรฉzaire-sur-Siagne, in partnership with the V-performance association.

Other actions target young people: a sensitization module will be offered at the National Universal Service in Isola on June 25, and a day dedicated to 15-16-year-olds is scheduled for June 27 at the Saint-Augustin police station in Nice.

Finally, a last operation is planned on July 4 at a highway rest area in partnership with Vinci and the gendarmerie.

In 2024, 55 people were killed on the department’s roads. This figure is slightly higher than in 2023 (54). However, the number of serious injuries decreased from 354 to 334. Authorities remain mobilized to limit risks and protect all users.
