Road safety in the Alpes-Maritimes: accidents and serious injuries on the rise in June

The road safety report for Alpes-Maritimes shows an increase in accidents involving injuries, seriously injured persons and deaths in June 2026. Since the beginning of the year, the number of people killed remains, however, lower than that recorded in the same period in 2025.

As each month, the prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes publishes road safety figures for the department. In June, the indicators are rising again in Alpes-Maritimes. This is due to the beginning of the holiday season, generating more traffic on the road network of Alpes-Maritimes. In total, 84 accidents involving injuries were recorded, compared to 81 in June 2025, an increase of 3.7%. The number of people killed increased from three to four over one year, while seriously injured persons increased from 38 to 48.

The first half report, however, shows a different trend. Between January 1 and June 30, 2026, sixteen people lost their lives on the roads of the department, compared to twenty in the same period of the previous year.

Users of two-wheelers remain the most exposed

Motorcycle and scooter riders remain the users most affected by fatal accidents since the beginning of the year. Seven of the sixteen people who died were riding motorcycles or scooters, representing nearly 44% of the victims recorded in the first six months of 2026.

Pedestrians also remain at risk from traffic-related incidents. More broadly, the authorities remind that vigilance remains essential for all road users, regardless of the mode of transport.

The increase in accidents involving injuries and seriously injured persons observed in June comes as the summer season approaches, traditionally marked by heavier traffic on the roads of Alpes-Maritimes.

Road safety awareness actions throughout the summer

Alongside this report, several road safety awareness operations are scheduled for the summer in Alpes-Maritimes. Actions will be carried out during the Nice Jazz Festival, at a rest area on the A8 motorway in Mougins, at the Electronic Beaches in Cannes, at the finish of the Tour de France Women in Nice as well as in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

Activity related to administrative sanctions is, for its part, declining. In June, 224 driving license suspensions were imposed, compared to 279 a year earlier. These measures are part of the firm policy applied in the department to combat dangerous behavior on the roads. Caution remains essential, especially during periods of high heat which can unconsciously be a factor in reduced attention while driving. On the road to your vacation, remember to take regular breaks, every two hours to follow road safety recommendations and to stay well hydrated.
