Road Safety: Mixed Figures in February

Latest News

**Personal injury accidents and serious injuries increase in February, while mortality remains stable. The prefecture also announces a decrease in driver’s license suspensions and is ramping up awareness actions in the coming weeks.**

The [Prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes](https://www.nicepremium.fr/actualites/narcotrafic-violences-securite-routiere-la-prefecture-fait-le-bilan/) has published the road accident report for **February 2026**. The provisional data shows a mortality level identical to that of February 2025, but an increase in personal injury accidents and serious injuries. Authorities are calling for caution, especially in urban areas where fatal accidents have been concentrated this month.

State services report **49 personal injury accidents in February 2026**, compared to 42 a year earlier. The number of serious injuries reached 18, whereas it was 12 in February 2025. These figures come from the data provided by internal security forces and are subject to consolidation.

Mortality remains at the same level as last year, with two deaths recorded. **Pedestrians** have been identified as a particularly exposed category since the beginning of the year. In this respect, the prefecture reminds us of Article R.415‑11 of the Highway Code: *“any driver must give way, stopping if necessary, to a pedestrian (…)”*

The distribution by user categories does not show any noticeable change compared to February 2025. A motorist and a pedestrian are among the victims. No deaths involved motorized two-wheelers, cyclists, or users of motorized personal transport devices.

The analysis by age groups highlights a mixed situation according to the groups. No deaths affected those under 18 years old, whereas a young person had lost their life in February 2025. The 25‑64 years age group accounts for one victim, while people aged 65 and older remain at the same level as last year.

The location of fatal accidents shows **a concentration in urban areas**, with two deaths recorded. No fatal accidents were recorded outside of urban areas or on highways.

The weekly distribution indicates two deaths at the beginning of the week, one on Monday and one on Wednesday. The other days do not show any notable changes compared to February 2025.

The daily distribution does not highlight any specific concentration. Fatal accidents occurred at different times, without a marked trend between daytime and nighttime periods.

**Decrease in license suspensions and upcoming prevention actions**

The prefecture issued **338 orders of driver’s license suspension in February 2026**, compared to 376 in the same period in 2025. This trend comes a year after the revision of the suspension scale, which came into effect on February 1, 2025. This scale applies a stricter approach, notably for probationary drivers.

**Several awareness actions** are planned in the coming weeks. Interventions will take place on March 24 and 25 for young consumers and health students. An operation will also be held **at Palais Nikaïa on March 31**, in partnership with the Probation and Integration Service. Other events are scheduled for April, notably at the **Nikaïa parking**, the Nice prefecture, the **Motorcycle Show in [Cannes](https://www.nicepremium.fr/actualites/cannes/)**, the **Rider Festival in Menton**, or during prevention actions in businesses and town halls.

These initiatives are part of an ongoing prevention effort, as the department recorded 51 deaths and 368 serious injuries in 2025. Authorities remind that all data is accessible through the [Departmental Road Safety Observatory](https://www.alpes-maritimes.gouv.fr/Actions-de-l-Etat/Securite-routiere-et-deplacements/Les-chiffres-de-l-accidentalite/L-Observatoire-departemental-de-securite-routiere).
