Royal Route from Nice to Turin: New Research.

Latest News

  • This conference is part of the series “From the States of Savoy to Italian Unity,” initiated by Jean-Marc Giaume, Deputy for Historical Heritage, Niçoise Language and Culture.

-Jean-Loup Fontana’s conference highlighted the knowledge about the Royal Road from Turin to Nice, well-documented by research already conducted at the Royal Library of Turin and the State Archives of this city, which he published in the early 1990s, now supplemented by the classification of the historical archives of the Intendancy of the city and the County of Nice.
The route, established in the early years of the 17th century and modernized at the end of the 18th century, underwent significant developments during the Sardinian Restoration, particularly aimed at opening up to European “tourism.” Contrary to poorly or insufficiently documented claims, the Royal Road indeed survived the Congress of Vienna and the Free Trade of the 19th century, as shown by the recently reviewed archives.
Essentially, it consists of new research and documents.

-Jean-Loup Fontana has been a departmental curator of heritage since 1986. He is responsible for the identification, conservation, and publication of works and monuments primarily belonging to the municipalities that the General Council assists in these functions.
